The lens you choose on your Infinity Projectors gobo projector has a huge impact on:

  • How large the projection diameter is on your wall, floor, or building
  • How far you can mount the projector from the projection surface
  • How concentrated or spread out your projector’s light is (tight logo vs. large wash)

Underneath all of that is one key reality:

Wattage is everything when it comes to how bright your projection looks.

How much wattage you need depends on three things working together:

  1. Projection distance – how far the projector is from the surface
  2. Projection diameter – how big you want the projection to be
  3. Light Setting in the projection area – is it Dark, Average, or Bright?

On many Infinity Projectors product pages, you’ll see wattage recommendation charts. These charts are based on our standard 1:0.33 lens ratio (short: 0.33), which is the default lens on most models.

If you choose a wider lens (0.50, 0.65, 0.90, 1.0, etc.), you’re spreading the same light over a larger projection diameter. Your wattage doesn’t change—but your lumens per square foot (or meter) do, so in practice you usually need more wattage than what the 0.33-based chart suggests, especially in Average or Bright Light Settings.


Why Lenses Matter (and Why Many Customers Buy More Than One)

Think of your Infinity projector as a light engine + lens:

  • The projector wattage decides how much light you have to work with.
  • The lens decides how that light is used—tight and intense, or wide and spread out.

Because of that, swapping lenses is one of the easiest ways to:

  • Adapt to different room sizes
  • Adjust to different mounting distances
  • Move between a tight, high-impact logo and a large decorative projection

Some real-world patterns:

  • Small indoor room → wider lens (e.g. 1:0.50) so the projection fills more of the wall or floor from a short distance.
  • Large ballroom → standard lens (1:0.33) so the projection stays bright and well-sized from further away.
  • Architectural or long-throw signage → tighter lens (1:0.25 or below) to keep the logo crisp at distance.

Many Infinity Projectors clients—especially event planners, DJs, rental houses and venues—order 2–3 lenses per projector so the same fixture can handle:

  • Small rooms
  • Big rooms
  • Outdoor facades

…without buying a second projector. You’re essentially turning one fixture into a multi-purpose projection toolkit just by changing lenses.


How Lens Ratios & Throw Distance Work

Each Infinity lens is described by a projection ratio (or lens ratio) such as:

  • 1:0.25 (0.25)
  • 1:0.33 (0.33)
  • 1:0.50 (0.50)
  • 1:0.65 (0.65)

You can think of that ratio as:

Lens ratio = Projection diameter ÷ Distance

Rearranged, the working formula is:

Projection diameter (ft) ≈ Distance from projector (ft) × Lens ratio

For a 1:0.33 (0.33) lens:

  • At 10 ft (≈3 m), projection diameter ≈ 10 × 0.33 → 3.3 ft (≈1.0 m)
  • At 20 ft (≈6 m), projection diameter ≈ 20 × 0.33 → 6.6 ft (≈2.0 m)

If you want a larger projection diameter at the same distance, you choose a higher lens ratio (0.50, 0.65, 0.90, 1.0, etc.). If you want a smaller, tighter projection at the same distance, you choose a lower lens ratio (0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30).

Just remember:

  • Higher lens ratio → bigger projection → more area to light → more wattage needed
  • Lower lens ratio → smaller projection → more of your wattage concentrated into a tighter area

And an important fine-tuning trick:

You can always make the projection a smaller than the maximum a lens allows by printing your logo smaller on the gobo slide, instead of using the full gobo area.

The lens sets your maximum practical projection diameter at a given distance; the artwork size on the gobo lets you fine-tune within that range.

  • You’re mostly doing close-range work where a medium or wide lens makes more sense

1:0.20 (0.20) – Narrow Long-Throw

1:0.25 (0.25) – Tight Beam (Default on Many High-Wattage Models)

Why many high-wattage models default to 1:0.25 (0.25):

High-power projectors are often used on bigger structures and at longer distances. A smaller lens ratio keeps the projection tight, focusing that extra power into a sharp, bright result instead of washing out.

Maybe choose another lens if:

  • You’re often working at short throw distances indoors and want a bigger projection
  • You mostly do smaller venues where a medium lens like 0.33 or 0.50 is more practical

1:0.30 (0.30) – Slightly Tight, Focused Logo

1:0.33 (0.33) – Standard Medium Beam (Default on Most Models)

  • You consistently need much larger projections at close range (go wider: 0.50, 0.65, etc.)
  • You usually project from very long distances and need a tighter beam (go narrower: 0.25, 0.20, 0.15)

1:0.45 (0.45) – Medium-Wide Coverage

1:1.30 (1.30) – Extreme Wide (Use With Care)

  • Use mainly for short throws in dark environments, and primarily for patterns rather than detailed logos

1:1.40 (1.40) – Maximum Spread (Specialty)

Important notes:

  • Spreads light over a very large area
  • Not recommended for throws over ~15 ft (≈ 4.5 m) or in Bright Light Settings
  • Use only in dark rooms with strong projectors, and set expectations that this is more of a wide decorative look than a precision logo

Fine-Tuning Projection Size With Artwork

Lenses set the maximum practical projection diameter at a given distance. You can always make the projection a bit smaller by:

  • Printing your logo or artwork smaller on the gobo slide, instead of using the full gobo area.

So if you’re between two lens choices, it’s often smart to pick the lens that covers your largest expected scenario, then fine-tune smaller setups by scaling the artwork.

Example: Event planner with a 120 W Infinity Projectors setup (indoor use)

Scenario 1 – Small indoor room

  • Distance: 12 ft (≈ 3.7 m)
  • Desired projection diameter: ~6 ft (≈ 1.8 m)
  • Great choice: 1:0.50 (0.50) lens
    • 12 ft × 0.50 ≈ 6 ft (≈ 1.8 m)
  • Result: A strong, well-sized logo in a modest-sized room.

Scenario 2 – Larger room

  • Distance: 20 ft (≈ 6.1 m)
  • Desired projection diameter: ~6 ft (≈ 1.8 m)
  • Great choice: 1:0.33 (0.33) lens
    • 20 ft × 0.33 ≈ 6.6 ft (≈ 2.0 m)
  • Result: Similar apparent size from a longer throw.

With just two lenses (0.50 and 0.33), that mid-power 120 W Infinity projector can handle both types of indoor events. No extra projector required—just change the lens and join the projection revolution wherever you go. Note that we recommend more then 120W for larger rooms and projections with brighter settings.

For our highest-wattage outdoor projectors (150 W+), tighter lenses like 0.25 and below are often used for long distances and bright environments.


Infinity 3D Prism Lenses

For extra impact, Infinity Projectors offers 3D Prism Lenses that split and transform one gobo into multiple projections. These are ideal when you want your projection to feel more dynamic, multi-point, and “infinite”.


Infinity TriScope 3D Prism Lens (Triangular Prism – 3 Projections)

What it does

The Infinity TriScope 3D Prism Lens uses a triangular prism to split a single gobo into three separate projections. You see three copies of your design arranged in a triangle or fan-like pattern, creating a multi-image 3D effect that feels much more energetic than a single projection.

Approximate effective lens ratios

Because TriScope spreads the light into three projections, the overall spread acts a bit differently than a standard single-image lens. For planning distance and projection diameter, you can use these approximate effective lens ratios:

  • On 35 W – 100 W projectors:
    • Approx. effective lens ratio ≈ 1:0.50 (0.50)
  • On 150 W – 700 W projectors:
    • Approx. effective lens ratio ≈ 1:0.60 (0.60)

You can still use the same formula:

Projection diameter (ft) ≈ Distance (ft) × effective lens ratio
Projection diameter (m) ≈ Distance (m) × effective lens ratio

Just remember you’re now seeing three projections instead of one.

Best uses

  • Dance floors and ceilings where you want three moving logos or icons
  • Stage backdrops that benefit from a cluster of repeated projections
  • Medium-sized spaces where three projections fill the area nicely

Artwork tips

  • Choose simple shapes and bold symbols
  • Great with stars, hearts, fish, and abstract geometric patterns
  • For logos, use minimal text and a strong, recognizable icon

Wattage & Light Setting

  • The light is divided into three beams, so each projection receives less light than a single standard lens
  • Works best with medium to high-wattage Infinity projectors in Dark or Average Light Settings
  • In Bright settings, treat it as a more subtle, decorative effect or increase your wattage for best impact.

Infinity PentaScope 3D Prism Lens (Pentaprism – 5 Projections)

What it does

The Infinity PentaScope 3D Prism Lens uses a pentaprism to create five projections of the same gobo. The result is a star-like cluster of projections—one design multiplied into a rich, multi-point pattern.

Approximate effective lens ratio

Because PentaScope splits your light into five projections, the overall spread is wider. For planning:

  • On 35 W – 700 W projectors:
    • Approx. effective lens ratio ≈ 1:0.65 (0.65)

Again, use:

Projection diameter (ft) ≈ Distance (ft) × 0.65 (approx.)
Projection diameter (m) ≈ Distance (m) × 0.65

This gives you a good estimate of the diameter of the cluster of five projections at a given distance.

Best uses

  • Large dance floors, stages and club ceilings where one projection isn’t enough
  • Multi-point decorative looks and 3D-style gobo effects
  • High-energy shows, themed parties and installations that need a strong visual highlight

Artwork tips

  • Loves simple, high-contrast designs
  • Great with repeating motifs like stars, snowflakes, bubbles, fish, flowers and abstract shapes
  • Avoid dense, text-heavy gobos; small text becomes harder to read when split into five

Wattage & Light Setting (very important)

  • PentaScope splits your light into five beams, so each projection receives less light than TriScope’s three
  • Works best with higher-wattage Infinity projectors in Dark or lower-Average Light Settings
  • In Bright spaces, expect a softer, decorative multi-point effect rather than a sharp, high-contrast projection

Ideal Artwork for 3D Prism Lenses

Both prism lenses work best with:

  • Simple, high-contrast graphics
  • Minimal or no text
  • Symbols and shapes that still look good when multiplied, such as:
    • Stars, snowflakes, fireworks
    • Fish, bubbles, leaves, flowers
    • Simple icons or logos without fine details

Text-heavy designs or very small fonts can become hard to read when split into multiple projections, so we recommend using clean, bold artwork for the best 3D prism effect.


FAQ – Lenses & Lens Packages

Q1: How hard is it to change the lens on an Infinity Projectors unit?

A: It’s designed to be straightforward. On most Infinity Projectors:

  1. You loosen or twist off the front lens housing or retaining ring.
  2. Gently remove the current lens.
  3. Insert the new lens in the same orientation.
  4. Tighten the ring or housing back into place.

There’s no rewiring and no deep disassembly. If you’re comfortable changing a light bulb or camera lens, you can change an Infinity lens.


Q2: Do you recommend that I buy extra lenses?

A: For many customers—especially professionals who move the projector between different rooms or venues—the answer is yes.

Extra lenses make one projector behave like a flexible toolkit:

  • Tight lens (e.g. 0.25) for longer distances and brighter looks
  • Medium lens (0.33) for everyday indoor events
  • Wide lens (0.50 or 1.1) for larger projections in darker rooms

If you work in different venues, at different distances, or want both tight logos and large decorative projections, extra lenses are one of the best upgrades you can make.


Q3: What lens packages does Infinity Projectors offer?
