It matters because distance sets both image size and brightness: with our standard 0.33 lens, image width = 0.33 × distance — 10 feet of throw makes a ~3.3-foot image, 20 feet makes ~6.6 feet (in industry notation, that's a 3.0:1 throw ratio). Longer throws also spread the light over more area, so they call for more wattage. Measure your real distance first — it's the one number that determines the right lens and wattage for your job.

Public sidewalks and streets vary by city: some treat a projected logo as signage under the local sign ordinance, while many don't address projection at all. The practical playbook: aim from your own property, keep the projection tasteful and non-blinding, and check with your city's zoning or sign office before making a public-sidewalk projection permanent. And because it's only light, you can always reposition it in minutes — no repainting, no removal costs.

Even though projection leaves no mark, casting your branding on a building you don't own or lease can be treated as unauthorized advertising and can draw complaints or fines. Yes, with two caveats. Clean, untinted glass passes most of the light, but each pane costs roughly 8–15% of the brightness, and tinted or Low-E coated glass cuts more — so plan a wattage tier higher if your glass is coated. Angle matters too: aim close to straight-on, because steep angles through glass can create a faint double image from reflections. One distinction worth knowing: projecting through a window onto the sidewalk works with clear glass, but projecting onto glass so the image shows on the window itself requires rear-projection film or a frosted surface — clear glass won't catch an image.

The projection on the surface is completely safe to look at, walk over, and photograph — it's ordinary focused LED light, the same family as stage lighting. Normal courtesy applies to the fixture itself: don't stare directly into the lens up close, just as you wouldn't stare into any bright light.
