A gobo projector is a light fixture that projects a custom image — usually a logo, pattern, or message — onto a wall, floor, ceiling, or building. "Gobo" is a small disc (glass or steel) with your design cut or printed into it; the projector shines a bright LED light through that disc so your design appears as sharp, focused light on any surface. It's a no-install way to brand a space or add signage: you plug it in, aim it, and swap the design whenever you like. Infinity Projectors' gobo projectors range from 35W to 1500W for indoor and outdoor use, and every projector includes two free full-color custom gobos.

They are essentially the same thing — the terms are used interchangeably. "Logo projector" describes the most common use (projecting a company's logo), while "gobo projector" is the technical name, referring to the "gobo" disc that holds the design. A logo projector is simply a gobo projector loaded with a logo gobo. The same Infinity projector can display a logo, a safety marking, a wedding monogram, or a seasonal pattern — you just change the gobo.

In full direct daylight the projected image washes out (this is true of all projection). A gobo is the small disc that holds your design — a piece of coated glass (or laser-cut steel) that slides into the projector so light passing through it casts your logo, monogram, or pattern as a crisp image. The name comes from stage-lighting shorthand for "goes before optics." Glass gobos can carry full color and even photographic detail; steel gobos project a single color. Swap the disc and the same projector shows a completely different design — and every Infinity gobo projector includes two free full-color custom gobos to start.

Three parts decide the result: the wattage sets brightness, the gobo carries the artwork, and the lens sets image size (lens number × distance = image width, so our standard 0.33 lens makes a 3.3-foot image from 10 feet away). Throw distance is simply how far the projector sits from the surface it projects on. It matters because distance sets both image size and brightness: with our standard 0.33 lens, image width = 0.33 × distance — 10 feet of throw makes a ~3.3-foot image, 20 feet makes ~6.6 feet (in industry notation, that's a 3.0:1 throw ratio). Longer throws also spread the light over more area, so they call for more wattage. Measure your real distance first — it's the one number that determines the right lens and wattage for your job.

A gobo projector casts a fixed design — your logo, a monogram, a pattern — through a physical glass disc, while a video projector displays moving digital content from a media source. For branding and signage, the gobo projector is the right tool: it puts all of its light into one crisp image, stays razor-sharp outdoors, runs unattended for years, and costs less to buy and run. On your own property — your entryway, patio, interior floors and walls — you generally don't need a permit; it's your light on your surface. Public sidewalks and streets vary by city: some treat a projected logo as signage under the local sign ordinance, while many don't address projection at all. The practical playbook: aim from your own property, keep the projection tasteful and non-blinding, and check with your city's zoning or sign office before making a public-sidewalk projection permanent. And because it's only light, you can always reposition it in minutes — no repainting, no removal costs.

Only with the owner's permission. Even though projection leaves no mark, casting your branding on a building you don't own or lease can be treated as unauthorized advertising and can draw complaints or fines. The good news: permission is often easy to get — for events, partnerships, or a great shared wall, many owners will happily approve a beautiful projection. No — a projection is only light, so it leaves no residue, heat damage, or marks on any surface. That's one of its biggest advantages over paint, vinyl, and adhesive signage: brick, marble, historic facades, hardwood floors, and delicate finishes are all completely safe, and the "sign" disappears the moment you switch it off. Modern LED gobo projectors also run far cooler than old halogen fixtures. Aim it, enjoy it, and change your mind freely.

Yes, with two caveats. Clean, untinted glass passes most of the light, but each pane costs roughly 8–15% of the brightness, and tinted or Low-E coated glass cuts more — so plan a wattage tier higher if your glass is coated. Angle matters too: aim close to straight-on, because steep angles through glass can create a faint double image from reflections. One distinction worth knowing: projecting through a window onto the sidewalk works with clear glass, but projecting onto glass so the image shows on the window itself requires rear-projection film or a frosted surface — clear glass won't catch an image.

The projection on the surface is completely safe to look at, walk over, and photograph — it's ordinary focused LED light, the same family as stage lighting. Normal courtesy applies to the fixture itself: don't stare directly into the lens up close, just as you wouldn't stare into any bright light. People crossing the beam simply cast a brief shadow — no harm done, and on a dance floor it actually looks magical. If you're projecting onto a busy walkway, mount the projector higher and steeper so passing bodies block less of the beam.
