Projection basics
1What is a gobo (logo) projector?
A gobo projector throws a focused image — usually a logo, pattern, or message — onto a wall, floor, ceiling, or building. "Gobo" is an old stage-lighting term ("GOes Before Optics"): it's the small stencil or printed slide that sits in front of the light source and shapes the beam into your design. Are gobo projectors LED?

Do gobo projectors get hot or use a lot of electricity?
No. LED engines are efficient and run cool. Even a high-wattage projector draws modest power and plugs into a standard outlet; lower-wattage indoor models use very little.
3Projection vs. printed signs, neon & LED screens
Why light instead of a printed sign? A banner or vinyl graphic is fixed: one message, one spot, and it fades. 4What surfaces work best (and which fight you)
Projection is light bouncing back to the eye, so the surface matters almost as much as the projector. Light, matte, neutral surfaces — white or grey concrete, plaster, smooth stucco, light brick — reflect the most and give the boldest image. Dark, glossy, or busy surfaces eat or scatter the light, so they need more wattage, a smaller (brighter) image, or a lighter target. Glass and water are special cases worth planning around: clear glass won't "catch" an image from the front (you need rear-projection film or a frosted surface), and moving water shimmers, so aim at the deck or wall instead.

What is the best surface to project a logo onto?

Can I project onto a dark wall or a glossy floor?
Yes, but plan for it. Dark and glossy surfaces reflect less of the light back to the eye, so step up the wattage, keep the image a bit smaller (a smaller image concentrates the same light), or pick a lighter target nearby. The wattage finder accounts for this.
Can I project onto glass or a window?
Not from the front onto clear glass — the light passes through. To catch an image on glass you need rear-projection film or a frosted/etched surface. Projecting through a window onto something beyond it also loses brightness and can ghost, so it is best avoided.

Projection has its own vocabulary, and most of it sounds more technical than it is. Here are the words you'll meet while choosing a projector, each in one plain line — so a spec sheet never trips you up.

What is the difference between watts and lumens on a projector?
Watts is the power the projector draws and is used as an easy customer-facing proxy for brightness. Lumens is the actual amount of light it puts out, which is what really determines whether your image beats the ambient light. More lumens means the image holds up in brighter rooms.
What is throw ratio in simple terms?
Throw ratio is just the relationship between distance and image size. The easy way: image width is roughly the lens number times the distance — a 0.33 lens makes about a 3.3-foot image from 10 feet away. The formal "throw ratio" is the inverse of that number, written like 3:1, but the multiplier is all you need to size your projection.

How do I choose the right gobo projector?

What's the most important factor when buying a projector?

7Throw distance & image size (the math, simplified)
Throw distance is how far the projector sits from the surface. Together with the lens it sets how big your image will be, and the rule is simple: image width ≈ throw distance × lens ratio. A 0.33 lens at 30 ft of throw projects about a 10 ft wide image (30 × 0.33 ≈ 9.9 ft). Want it bigger? Move the projector back, or fit a wider lens. Want it tighter and sharper? Move closer, or fit a longer lens.

Can I make the image bigger without buying a new projector?
Yes — move the projector farther from the surface, or fit a wider lens (a smaller ratio like 0.25). Both enlarge the image; remember a larger image spreads the same light over more area, so brighter rooms may need higher wattage.
8Choosing the right wattage & brightness
Wattage drives brightness, and the right wattage depends almost entirely on the light competing with your projection. The darker the space, the less power you need; the brighter the space, the more. As a working baseline at a typical 30 ft throw: a dark room is happy around 150W, an average indoor space wants roughly 300–400W, and a bright daytime storefront needs about 500W to read clearly. A note on daylight
Projection is at its best in low light and after dark, when your image is the brightest thing around. In full daylight, even high-wattage projection competes with the sun — so most outdoor advertising projection is timed for dusk through close. If you need a true daytime solution, that's usually where an LED display, not a projector, is the right tool.
How many watts do I need for my projector?
It depends on throw distance and how much ambient light competes with the image. As a baseline at 30 ft: ~150W for a dark room, ~300–400W for average indoor light, and ~500W for a bright storefront. The Projector Finder prescribes an exact wattage from your inputs.
Will a gobo projector work in daylight?

9Lenses & multi-lens projectors
The lens sets your image size at a given distance, and whether you can show one design or several. A single-lens projector shows one gobo at a time — simple and sharp. A multi-lens projector (commonly 4, 6, or 8 gobos) holds several designs at once and can rotate or cycle through them, which is ideal for venues that want motion or a sequence of messages from one unit.

10Indoor vs. outdoor & IP ratings
If the projector will face rain, dust, or sun, it needs to be weatherproof. IP ratings tell you how sealed a unit is — an IP65-rated projector is dust-tight and protected against water jets, which covers most outdoor installs: building exteriors, patios, parking structures, and signage. Indoor projectors don't need the sealed housing and are lighter and lower-cost. For a semi-exposed spot — a covered entrance, a loading dock — choose the IP-rated model to be safe.

The whole math fits in one friendly line: image width ≈ lens number × distance. 20Changing, aligning & focusing a gobo
Swapping a gobo is a quick, tool-light job and it's what makes one projector do the work of many. You power down, open the gobo holder, drop in the new slide the right way around, close it up, and refocus. Two small things make it perfect: orientation and focus. Insert the gobo so the design lands upright and the right way round on the surface (a projector flips the image, so the slide goes in mirrored/inverted — our guide shows exactly how), then turn the focus ring until the edges are razor-sharp. For permanent installs we can pre-set this for you.

What do I need to send for a custom gobo?
Your logo or artwork — ideally a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF) so it scales perfectly, though a high-resolution PNG works too. Our designers prepare and optimize it for projection at no extra charge, and two custom gobos are free with every projector.
Will you tell me if my logo won't project well?
Yes. Send your artwork and our designers will review it honestly — bold shapes and strong contrast project best, while very fine details and pale colors can fade at distance. We will suggest simple tweaks (or recommend a full-color glass gobo for complex logos) before anything is made.
